Blue Amazon & Zak Gee – Nutcracker [Mirabilis Records]

The latest release on Alec Nemec’s Mirabilis records finds Blue Amazon and Zak Gee collaborating on a brand new single entitled ‘Nutcracker’. The UK duo first appeared on the Slovenian imprint in 2017 with a remix of Napalm & d-phrag. Now following their expansive ‘Interpretations’ series the duo are back on Mirabilis with a brand new single alongside a remix from Nihil Young.

The original mix brings everything we’ve come to expect from these two studio savants. Energetic tech prog sensibilities with a definite nod to the old school. At 128 bpm it’s quite a rocking affair as vocal stabs and waves of percussion flow through the framework. The squelchy synths are suitably retro, bringing back memories of the late 90’s before a classic drum roll and powerful drop seals it’s brilliance.

The lone interpretation on the release is provided by Nihil Young who is making his label debut. The Italian artist and Frequenza boss is fresh off releases on Modest Electronica and M5, both of which received tremendous global support. Always a creative remixer, Nihil takes ‘Nutcracker’ into more melodic territory with an arpy interpretation that sits as a lovely complement to the original. The tempo shifts down a touch but the pulsating, energetic core remains, all rooted by a wonderfully robust kick. The break makes great use of the rolls and dramatic sense from the original with a similarly yet slightly more modern result. A massive remix from Nihil which rounds out a superb release from Alex Nemec’s Mirabilis Records. Don’t miss it.
