Montreal’s Strange Town Recordings caps off their best year on record with a new single from Waxman. The Toronto based artist emerged in early 2017 with a release on Blake Sutherland’s excellent Wide Angle Recordings, and has since gone on to record a single and EP for the Canadian imprint. Now keeping things northbound, Waxman debuts on Strangetown Recordings alongside a remix from the always on point EANP.

Beginning with the title and showcase piece ‘Deep Blue’ we get a unique blend of indie dance and progressive house. It’s something that was prevalent on Waxman’s debut effort on Wide Angle as well and it’s a quite a unique cross pollination. The vocal elements make for very pleasant hooks and a spacious yet ultra groovy framework carries a rough character and lovely free flowing vibe. The companion piece ‘Round Trip’ is an equally inspired affair with a buzzing energy that resonates strongly throughout. Emotive yet edgy, it’s a unique contrast that culminates following a short, timely and tension filled break, perfectly setting up a charged finale.

The lone interpretation of ‘Deep Blue’ is provided by one of the progressive scenes most beloved duos in EANP. It’s been a remarkable year for Ezequiel Anile and Nicolas Petracca, with steady support from Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, along with a string of Beatport chart successes. Now returning to Strange Town following their interpretation of ‘Meru’ by Jacob Seville, the duo lay down another killer remix to close out the year. The unique energy which made the original so compelling actually translates quite well here, albeit in a much more progressive minded context. The vocal gets chopped and reprocessed for what is a deadly hook, playing nicely off a chugging groove and waves of percussion, before opening up during a consciousness expanding break. Eerily similar to some of progressive music’s finest golden era moments, this is another creation sure to find a home in the sets of the world’s finest DJs. EANP are a roll and it’s a long one, can’t wait to see what 2019 holds for this talented duo. It caps off an impressive year for Strange Town who also go into the new year with nice momentum.
