Lonya’s Asymmetric Recordings celebrates the 2018 Amsterdam Dance Event with a new VA EP. The annual conference has become one of the industries most popular events and with it comes some of the years best music. Asymmetric Recordings presents four fresh tracks from some of progressive music’s finest in Lonya & Mariano Mellino, Subandrio, Punu and Alejandro Manso.

There is no better way to kick off a collection of music than with a collaboration from two of the scenes finest. Lonya and Mariano Mellino are both names that are synonymous with top tier progressive music so a meeting of their creative minds is always going to be a must hear. Their contribution here ‘Enceladus’ explores progressive techno sensibilities with a driving, mystical storyboard primed for dance floor destruction. Waves of undulating bass power the foundation while astral sonics and trippy effects fill in the framework. A strong percussive complement builds momentum in flurries, before melting down into a second act of dramatic tones, effortlessly shifting energy into an epic finale. Next up one of Sri Lanka’s finest in Subandrio makes his label debut following an excellent remix for Juicebox Music. His contribution here marks his first original since his Sudbeat EP from January of this year. ‘Hunger Strikes’ comes with all the buzzing electricity we’ve come to expect from Subandrio with perhaps a slightly deeper, quirkier edge. It’s bulbous, twisting groove is immediately appealing, full of great character and an air of unpredictability, while a cavernous break of gorgeous sonic artefacts and emotive moments eventually steals the show.

Also making his label debut is Punu who has recently appeared on Obsolescent, Selador and Sintope. His latest entitled ‘The Breach’ is wonderfully cross pollinated with techno sensibilities, progressive storyboarding and flurries of afro drums. Warm bass swells and classic chord changes add some emotive charm along the way, eventually peaking as the third act commences with a commanding drop. The release concludes with Alejandro Manso also making his label debut following releases on Beatfreak Recordings and Movement Recordings. Although well known throughout the progressive community, the Mexican artist does vere into techno territory quite regularly and such is the case with ‘Red Queen’. Dark and dramatic from the outset it’s raspy hooks and ominous tones burrow deep into your subconscious, while a wobbly groove keeps your feet firmly on the dance floor. Short and timely, the main break advances the narrative with anticipatory moments, before a wave of harmonics transfers energy into a devilish finale. It’s the perfect conclusion to a diverse and exciting collection from Asymmetric, just in time for your ADE sets. Highly recommended.
