Sonic Future - Ooakland [One Of A Kind]

Sonic Future makes a much anticipated return to One Of A Kind this week with ‘Ooakland’. The Brazilian artist made his debut on the Swedish imprint in July of 2016 with a remix of ‘Nada’ by Bonaca. Now following a 2017 with releases on Crossfrontier Audio and Tulipa Recordings, Sonic Future presents his first single for One Of A Kind alongside remixes from Rauschhaus, Bonaca and Jelly For The Babies.

On paper this looks like the best One Of A Kind release to date and after thoroughly listening to it I have to say it is. Beginning with the original mix you get the very best of what Sonic Future does so well. Warm, immaculately contoured grooves combined with light, airy melodies and bright, detailed percussion. The icing on the cake comes in the form of trailing vocal gates and character rich stabs which play perfectly off the pulsating framework. Definitely one that's destined for many magical dance floor moments.

There are few artists in the progressive underground who are hotter at the moment than Rauschhaus. The German producer has been a constant fixture of the Beatport charts this year and has showcased his music on Manual Music, Parquet and Steyoyoke. It’s remarkable how consistent he is and he delivers a stunning interpretation of ‘Ooakland’ here. Big and tweaky in all the right ways it flows through a myriad of wonky motifs and cosmic effects, before transitioning into a more fluid second act. It’s an exhilarating shift of both energy and emotion, eventually getting washed away during the main break and setting up a dark and groovy finale. Big remix from Rauschhaus.

The second interpretation of ‘Ooakland’ is provided by Bonaca who is making his sixth appearance on the label. The Croatian born, Sweden based artist opts for a dubbier approach which complements the previous two versions perfectly. The sonic mulch which the elements have been put through is quite fresh sounding while the low slung groove carries considerable weight and swing keeping it nicely on the dance floor. Definitely my favourite version on the release and perhaps Bonaca’s finest remix to date.

The release concludes with One Of A Kind label boss Jelly For The Babies making his seventh appearance on the label. The Serbian artist also heads up The Purr and is fresh off a great EP for Heath Mill Recordings. Now returning to One Of A Kind he provides one of his best remixes of the year. Thankfully it’s not a big proggy mix because it really wouldn’t add much to the release. Instead Jelly opts for a deep, driving interpretation that focuses on smooth hypnotic arps and a warm, melodious groove. The vocal elements sound fabulous and the late night tones absolutely shine. A lovely remix from Jelly For The Babies rounding out One Of A Kind’s best and most sought after release to date. Highly Recommended.
