Santi Cebrero – Orion [Balkan Connection]

Santi Cebrero makes his production debut this week with a brand EP courtesy of Balkan Connection. Hailing from Olavarría, the Argentinean artist presents his ‘Orion’ release alongside remixes from Julian Nates and Nichols.

Having a label such as Balkan Connection, with over a decade of history in progressive music sign your first release is a remarkable accomplishment and it’s not something you see a lot. Santi however has done just that and with two excellent productions beginning with ‘Orion’. Punchy beats, crisp percussion and rugged rhythms make for a strong beginning, perfectly setting the stage for playful melodies and smooth chord changes. It’s a storyboard which evolves during the main break, building subtly with some sizzling modulation and delivering the perfect contrast in tension, which ultimately spearheads a heady finale. The companion piece ‘A Clear Horizon’ follows suit with a similar sonic ethos. Tough and driving yet melodic and tranquil, it’s a journey into meditative motifs and ethereal tones, most notably during a stunning break before the distinctive kick drops for a smooth, hypnotic third act.

The first of two remixes is provided by one of the progressive scenes fastest rising artists in Julian Nates. Having delivered an EP and a remix for the Serbian imprint, the Argentinian artist has also showcased his music on top imprints like Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden, Or Two Strangers and Soundteller Records. His sound has found favour with the genre’s top DJs with his ‘Orion' interpretation likely bound for a similar fate. Smooth, free flowing and full of great rhythmic qualities it’s a mix which downplays the melodic narrative of the original for a more spacious, atmospheric version that should fare quite well on the dance floor.

The release concludes with one of last year's most pleasant surprises in Nichols providing the second and final interpretation. Already owning releases on Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden and Praveen Archary’s Juicebox Music, the UK artist makes his Balkan Connection debut with a stunning rendition of ‘Orion’. The tempo shifts down a touch for a deeper, spacious yet tough and chugging take on the track. Fragmented melodies and a haze of ghostly atmospherics converge in the ultimate sonic marriage, perfectly shaping a memorable break and foreshadowing a groovy finale. It rounds out a sensational debut for Santi Cebrero and another great offering from Balkan Connection. Don’t miss it.
