Michael A – Consciousness [Strange Town Recordings]

Michael A returns to Strange Town Recordings this week with a new single alongside remixes from Lucas Rossi and Magitman. The Belarus based artist and Genesis Music boss has become a regular contributor to the Canadian imprint having already appeared six times in the past. Also finding a home on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music and Cid Inc's Replug Records, Michael now lands back on Strange Town for the much anticipated 'Consciousness'.

Bettering yourself with each successive outing is no easy task but Michael seems to find a way to continually push his creative scope. ‘Consciousness’ is a perfect example and is already a favourite amongst some of the industry’s foremost tastemakers. The DJ friendly intro becomes immediately captivating as an array of detailed percussion and quirky hooks create an air of anticipation. Offset rhythms and acidic-like themes soon follow before you’re effortlessly taken away into an astral wonderland. Subtle yet powerful, the main break is a journey unto itself, a touch cinematic and grandiose in a way, it's dramatic leanings are powerful and perfectly set up a tasteful drop and groovy finale. Heady music from Michael.

The first interpretation is provided by one of the scenes brightest talents in Lucas Rossi. With a discography that includes releases on Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden and Antrim’s Or Two Strangers, the Hernan Cattaneo favourite now makes his Strange Town debut with a gorgeous interpretation of ‘Consciousness’. Deep and fluid from the outset, it’s warm, contoured groove carries a captivating presence, before dreamy motifs and melodic clusters fill in the framework. Expertly executed, the near two minute interlude proves impactful, resonating with emotive overlays and elevating the mood before a tepid rush sets up a classy yet powerful drop.

The release concludes with Magitman making his label debut and providing the second and final interpretation of ‘Consciousness’. The Israeli artist has been a fixture of the electronic underground for well over a decade and that extensive experience is always evident in all his work. Now a regular on Proton Music and Beat Boutique, he lands on Strange Town with a killer take on ‘Consciousness’. Anchored by a warm, well carved groove and detailed percussion, there’s a smooth yet electric mood from the outset. Like most Magitman productions space is at a premium, with smart tonal themes and tranquil motifs sitting in a perfect sonic marriage, before the main break adds just the right amount of emotion and tension. A classy rework from Magitman, rounding out what is another top shelf release for Canada's Strange Town Recordings. Highly recommended.
