Mariner + Domingo – Skating On Ice [Balkan Connection]

Mariner + Domingo return to Serbia's Balkan Connection with 'Skating On Ice'. In what has been a fruitful partnership, the last year saw the US duo rise through the landscape of progressive and organic house. It is Balkan Connection who has the distinction of releasing Mariner + Domingo's first ever single in July of last year, with duo then going on to record a follow-up and a remix for the long standing imprint. On the strength of those releases along with outings for 3rd Avenue, RYNTH, Sound Avenue and The Purr, the duo quickly grew into one the organic house scene's freshest new acts. 2021 has only seen Mariner + Domingo rise higher, beginning the year with their ‘Move On’ EP via Madloch’s Sound Avenue imprint. Highlighting the release was the Lee Burridge supported ‘Another Life’ which quickly rose to the top of the duo’s best seller’s chart. Now as the month of July begins, Mariner + Domingo return to Balkan Connection with a new two track showcase.

Lead track 'Skating On Ice' once again shows the duo's uncanny ability to marry exotic percussive arrangements with heartfelt musical themes. Fluttery vocal fragments blanket a series of cascading motifs, while breezy overlays and buoyant drums add texture and rhythm. A touch whimsical sounding at points, the main break finds the lead theme melting down into a tranquil, fuzzy soundscape. Warm bass notes begin a gentle rise as the interlude evolves, eventually reaching a smooth crescendo, groovy drop and fantastical finale. The companion piece 'I Feel Love' comes in a touch deeper with a late night style groove, meandering themes and layers of perfectly manicured percussion. Framework-wise it might be one of Mariner + Domingo's housiest creations to date, but the atmospheric phrasing and hazy design quality keeps it firmly in the dreamier spectrum of the genre. It rounds out two more beauties from the American duo, who appropriately return to the label where their run began almost a year ago to the date. Highly recommended.
