Long regarded as one of Canada’s finest electronic music exports, Dowden has taken his elaborate progressive sound to trendsetting imprints such as Clubsonica, EDGE, Mango Alley, Meanwhile and John OO Fleming’s Joof Recordings, while earning continued support from genre tastemakers Cid Inc, Guy J and Hernan Cattaneo. Meanwhile, Russian artist Christina Gavrilova aka Forty Cats has enjoyed similar success in her solo endeavors. Although just four years into her career as a producer, Christina has gone on to release projects via Lane 8’s This Never Happened, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music, Mango Alley and Sound Avenue. Having both appeared on Juicebox Music previously, Dowden and Forty Cats now make a welcome return to the label for their first ever joint project entitled 'Orbit / Airtime', alongside a remix from Alan Cerra. Beginning with 'Orbit', Dowden and Forty Cats masterfully synthesize their talents into a sleek and stylish progressive cut that's nicely suited for midset play. Light and airy throughout, its effervescent effects and gentle melodic clusters marry well, making for a cosmic storyboard that plays out over warm voluptuous grooves and fluttery percussive arrangements. The intuitive musical dialogue held between the duo continues on 'Airtime' which wins you over with it's groove-centric approach. A heavier low end provides the backbone for weighted rhythms and scintillating synth flares to command your attention, before collapsing waves of light and mysterious vocal edits seal its brilliance during a thought provoking break. Rounding out the release with the lone interpretation of 'Airtime' is Alan Cerra who returns to the label following his 'Henkere / Arrival' EP from 2022. The Argentinean's high energy style has worked wonders here, as he remodels the original into a hyperventilating helium rush of clattering percussion and rolling rhythmic structures. Powerful stuff from Alan which caps off a sensational release for Juicebox Music, one which gets 2023 off to a great start for Dowden and Forty Cats. Highly recommended.
