John Johnson's ICONYC opens the month of March by welcoming Black Space back to the label for a new single. Based in Switzerland, Black Space first came to our attention with releases via Einmusika across 2019 and 2020, before eventually landing on ICONYC with a remix of 'The Sky Is Still There' by Schormann. Now on the strength of a 2021 remix for Diploid, Black Space returns to ICONYC for his first single entitled 'Dark Har', alongside remixes from Schoonebeek and Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic.

Diversifying his portfolio further, it is Black Space's masterstroke to collaborate with vocalist Yann Menge. Following an intro of punchy beats, neatly tailored percussion and placid pads comes a bed of rippling bass tones and lively electronics. Effortlessly rising, retro claps and rhythmic pulses set the stage for Yann's sublime chops to deliver their magic. Soulful and impassioned, Yann's memorable phrasing highlights the main break, drifting across an underbelly of striking chord stabs and sweeping synths, before a warm rush ushers in a glowing finale.

Making his label debut and providing the first interpretation of 'Dark Har' is German newcomer Schoonebeek. The groove gets reshaped into something more emotive and playful, while the strength of the vocal carries it's colourful musicality really well. Buzzing bass tones resonate across the break, providing the perfect backbone for Yann's vocal to meander and delight above a thrilling finale. Lovely stuff from Schoonebeek.

Rounding out the release are ICONYC stalwarts and Mistique Music bosses Michael, Levan and Stiven Rivic, who deliver an equally excellent remix. The trio unleash their impressive bassline crafting skills here, with a reworked groove that carries an immense amount of shape and character. The vocal takes a secondary role throughout the mix, with powerful chord stabs and a wide array of effects providing the bulk of the narrative, while the vocal gets chopped and reprocessed for more of an elemental use. Hard to go wrong with any of the three versions here, with all three artists delivering work that is both creative and emotive. Stellar stuff from John Johnson's ICONYC, who have certainly maintained great momentum across 2022's first quarter. Highly recommended.
