Astral Base – Other Side [ICONYC]

The latest release from John Johnson's ICONYC finds Astral Base returning to the label for a new single. Hailing from Moscow, Russian artist Artem Kalalb aka Astral Base found footing in the electronic underground following a well-received debut via Denis A’s DAR imprint in 2020. Further successes followed with BCSA, SLC-6 Music and ICONYC's Noir division being landing spots for Artem’s unique brand of melodic techno. Now making the jump to ICONYC's primary imprint, Artem unveils his latest studio creation 'Other Side' alongside remixes from Whoriskey and Frezel.

Nicely dialled for the summer season, 'Other Side' lands as Artem's most emotive track to date. Pristine production combined with warm rolling grooves, crunchy rhythms and flickering percussive arrangements set a strong foundation. Emotive key changes and striking chord stabs make for a lively first act, perfectly setting up a moderately tense and expertly crafted break, before shifting energy into a smooth balmy finale. Definitely one to send your dance floor home with a smile.

The first remix is supplied by Whoriskey who makes his label debut following excellent projects for Freegrant, JOOF Aura, Perfecto Black and UV. The Irish artist takes inspiration from the Original and crafts an equally excellent version that carries some lovely trance inducing qualities. Bubbly and effervescent throughout it's a grandiose break which ultimately makes the track, flowing through gorgeous vocal overlays and whimsical motifs, before a vortex of modulation spearheads a euphoric finale.

The release concludes with Frezel also making his label debut with the second and final remix of 'Other Side'. The Dutch artist brings a decade's worth of production experience and projects via Aftertech Records, Cinematique, Manual Music and more. For his ICONYC debut Frezel complements the previous versions really well with a deeper, more introspective sounding rendition. Warm flowing bass swells, arpeggiated fragments and some lovely low end modulation make this one perfect for the morning hours. It caps off an excellent release for ICONYC, one where Astral Base, Whoriskey and Frezel all make impressive label debuts. Highly recommended.
