Domingo + – Just Drive [Sound Avenue]

Opening the month of July, Madloch's Sound Avenue welcomes Domingo + back to the label for a new EP. Formerly one half of the Mariner + Domingo duo, American artist Chris Domingo has compiled an impressive resume across a two-year stretch. Upon making his debut on Balkan Connection in July of 2020, the Florida resident went on a remarkable run, landing releases via 3rd Avenue, Proton Music, RYNTH and The Purr. Perhaps his most comfortable landing spot was Madloch's long-standing Sound Avenue imprint, where Mariner + Domingo released ten originals across ten months, none more impactful than 'Another Life' and 'Inertia', which earned play and support from Lee Burridge, Tim Green and Sebastien Leger. 2022 marked Chris' beginnings as a solo artist, with the freshly coined Domingo + alias. The Florida resident got the year underway with his latest Sound Avenue vehicle 'Hardway', a two-track showcase which set the course for what has been a prolific six months. Now on the strength of a remix for label affiliate 3rd Avenue, Domingo + returns to his comfortable home of Sound Avenue with 'Just Drive'.

Picking up on the themes he brought to 'Hardway', Chris has created three new tracks rich with spirit and allusion. Beginning with the creamy tonal textures and mallet-like clusters of 'Just Drive', an unexpected mood is revealed through haunted phrasing and celestial sonics. Evoking a bucolic style ecstasy, this rolling piece eventually breaks into a groovy mediative finale, one that is sure to lift the mood of your dance floor.

Moving forward with 'Light and Sound', Domingo + sustains an understated yet confident club energy. Fluttery drum arrangements and voluptuous bass lines set the course for oriental motifs and hopeful voices. Panoramic sequences and timely drum flurries provide a brief but timely interlude, before breaking off into a rush of clattering percussion and rolling rhythmic structures.

More enigmatic yet is the EPs closer 'Tribal Call', a creation which finds Chris etching towards a lighter monochrome. Dulcet kick drums and summery qualities lead to electrified iterations of new age sonics. Clever percussive coactions underpin a fascinating blend of enthusiastic projections, before segueing into a finale of sentimental tones and drum-driven euphoria. A fitting conclusion to three charming tracks from Domingo +, an artist who continues to have an exceptional year operating under his thriving solo moniker.
