Vicius (BR) – Ritual [Astral Records]

Astral Records continues a strong start to the year by welcoming Vicius (BR) to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from Brazil, Vicius (BR) first emerged in 2020, producing a mesmerizing and emotional brand of melodic house and techno. A debut on Prisma Music's Evolution III collection would set the course for an impressive stretch of releases via Melodic Room, Steyoyoke Black and his own Odissea Records imprint. Support from some of the scene's key figures such as Ae:ther, Binaryh, D-Nox and Hêik would follow, making the São Paulo resident a bright talent to watch going forward. With 2023 wrapping up with the release of his 'Fever Dream' single, Vinius (BR) now adds Astral Records to his resume, opening the year with a three-track showcase entitled 'Ritual'.

Landing in impressive fashion, title track 'Ritual' creates a smooth yet electric energy from the outset. Punchy kick drums and a hyperactive groove unite for a powerful low end, while gated vocals and uplifting chord stabs add nicely to its prophetic nature. The narrative evolves as the main break takes shape, with the vocal gates melting down into a gorgeous melodic theme and hopeful pads, perfectly setting the stage for a tasteful build and ethereal finale.

Sitting as one of Vicius' most emotional tracks to date is selection two 'When I Leave'. Deep and spacious, its dynamic groove commands attention, moving through chunky contours and rhythmic pulses, while heavenly vocals and flickering percussion add further colour leading into the main break. Undeniably poignant, the interlude allows the vocal to breathe, sitting against a backdrop of heartfelt themes, before ultimately ushering in an end of night final act.

The release concludes with 'First Light' which is an apt barometer of where Vicius' headspace is at. Once again providing a strong dancefloor presence, the Brazilian layers wavy arps and dark electronics over a warm pulsating groove and precise percussive arrangements. Bringing a greater emotional mood is the main break, highlighted by warm bass swells and haunting harmonics, before sinister stabs spark a cosmic finale to round out the EP in style.
