Turbokitchen – Walter [Strange Town Recordings]

Montreal’s Strange Town Recordings welcomes Turbokitchen to the label for their debut EP. Formed in 2014, the Italian trio boast a meticulous discography highlighted by releases on My Favorite Robot, Us and Them and Fade Records. Now making their first appearance on Strange Town, Turbokitchen presents their latest single entitled ‘Walter’ alongside remixes from Futur-E and Jacob Seville.

The original mix comes with a unique meld of styles, sitting comfortably between progressive house and techno. It’s melancholic in mood and perhaps best suited to late night play with it’s dulcet motifs and sweeping atmospheric storyboard. The break is timely and highly effective, gently raising the emotive qualities of the piece but in an elegant and tasteful manner.

Strange Town label artist Futur-E is first up on the remixes and he takes the track into more traditional progressive territory. It’s full driving groove is perfect for a peak time dance floor while the complement of firing percussion and astral effects only add to it’s elevating powers. The break transitions the piece into something quite charming, the seaside qualities are immediately apparent and shift the narrative momentarily before a storming finish.

The release concludes with Jacob Seville making his label debut following releases on MNL and SOSO. Born and raised in Poland but now based in Barcelona, Spain Jacob also runs the excellent Depthtone imprint. Always a creative remixer he puts his own unique twist on ‘Walter’ to close the release out. First off there’s a lovely effervescent quality to the sound design which makes it immediately captivating. Emotionally it’s on point as well, with an evolving narrative that teases the senses without ever fully cracking them. A lesson in restraint and one which ends up being incredibly powerful. A great remix from Jacob which caps off another well rounded release on Strange Town Recordings. Highly Recommended.
