Topek – I Had A Dream EP [Polyptych]

Continuing to add new talent to their roster, Polyptych welcomes Topek to the label with a two track showcase. Hailing from Poland and inspired by the likes of Pryda, Matthias Meyer, Rodriguez Jr, Hot Since 82, John Digweed and Lee Burridge, Topek emerged in 2014 after winning the Housefactorya.hu remix competition. This release set the course for his sound to evolve over the next half decade, now sitting somewhere comfortably between progressive house and melodic house & techno, with recent projects for Chrom Recordings and Electronic Tree sounding sensational. Having appeared on label subsidiary Polyptych Limited in August of last year, Topek now jumps up to the flagship imprint for his debut 'I Had A Dream'.

Sitting closer to the deeper, progressive minded spectrum of his repertoire, it is the title selection which leads the release off. Anchored by a warm, full bodied groove, its atmospheric scope rises effortlessly, with glowing overlays added depth and emotion, perfectly setting the stage for a strong but tastefully sparse piano motif. Hugely nostalgic, these cascading lines drift across the main break, eventually revealing further instrumentation which only adds to it's timeless appeal. Free of any dramatic build, the emphasis here is on musicality, which is not only satisfying but delightfully danceable.

The companion piece 'The Roots' continues the groovy, musical ethos of the EP in fine fashion. Much like it's predecessor, a traditional progressive minded groove sits at the foundation, while swing heavy rhythms and exotic percussion push momentum forward. Sitting at the heart of the creation is a two minute plus break which smoothly shifts the focus into tantalizing arps, symphonic motifs and buzzing, key changing tones. It's a remarkable sonic marriage which proves to be equal parts timeless and exhilarating, as percussive flurries and a rush of noise transfer energy in a glowing finale. It rounds out a spirited EP from Topek, making his first project for Polyptych a most memorable one. Highly recommended.
