Stan Seba – Perfect As You Are [Another Life Music]

9 min read

Label stalwart Stan Seba returns to Another Life Music for his debut album 'Perfect As You Are'. Based in South Korea, Stan Seba has been a fixture of the progressive house underground for the better part of a decade. First emerging with releases via Elliptical Sun Recordings and Massive Harmony Records, Stan was immediately recognized for his trance inspired melodies. In relatively short order the Gwangmyeong resident would go on to land projects via Future Avenue, Dopamine White and Zephyr Music. A bond with Another Life Music was also forged and nurtured over twenty-five discography credits in under three calendar years, making it safe to say that the Swiss imprint had become a primary home for some of Stan's most well received work. Now, following on from the September release of his remix for Juan Erbin's 'Matt is Gone', Stan returns to Another Life with his much anticipated debut album 'Perfect As You Are'.

Composed of ten unique and primarily club oriented productions, it is the deep vibes of the title selection which lead the release off. Instantly emotive, its lazy beats and loose basslines set the foundation for soulful atmospheric phrasing and a gorgeous piano motif to work their magic. A perfect prelude for the pacier tracks to come, the first of which are the buoyant beats and meandering melancholia of 'Rise Again'. A piece which highlights Stan's delicate but strong melodic sensibilities. Meanwhile, on 'Suddenly Here' Stan keeps that deep vibe flowing with a gorgeous blend of hazy harmonics and detailed percussive arrangements. 'The Healer Speaks' brings a more muscular foundation with beefier beats but sticks to the smooth atmospheric narrative set from the album's first act. Such is the case with the aptly titled 'Stormy Waters', a piece where Stan continues to explore timeless atmospheric moods with a big character rich groove to carry that message to the dancefloor.

The album's halfway point is marked with 'Night Shift', a piece which provides a touch more dance floor power with a full key changing groove and blocky claps to give those gentle overlays some additional grit and toughness. Stan's capacity for storytelling remains comforting on selection seven 'Dream and Create'. Here the Gwangmyeong resident works fuzzy stabs over dulcet beats and low slung grooves for one of the collection's most elaborate creations. Continuing on a lighter monochrome is 'Deep Focus' which makes great use of quirky synth clusters and alien-like design to create a piece which is equal parts emotive and hypnotizing. The utopian style ecstasy which emanates from 'This One Regret' is thoughtful and poignant, where the track's framework ultimately serves as a vehicle into a tense and otherworldly break, perhaps one of the album's most memorable moments in fact. Continuing to diversify his portfolio and landing as the collection's closing piece is 'Bedtime Story'. Here we move away from the previous nine acts (which were all in the same tempo range) and focus on a sparser, more delicate narrative, as notes ring out in timeless suspension, over a backdrop of rich textures and fragmented musicality. A more than fitting end to a gorgeous ten-track sound story from Stan Seba, an artist who continues to delight us with his deep and emotive brand of progressive house. Highly recommended.
