Whether paired with sometime studio partners Astropilot and Zirrex or creating solo, the Russian duo have remained at the top of their game since appearing on the scene in 2013. Spintribe forged a bond with John OO Fleming who took a liking to the duo's productions immediately, signing them to releases on his JOOF Recordings and Mantra imprints. Now fresh of a release for Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic's Mistique Music, Spintribe lands on Digital Diamonds with 'Phantoms'. For a duo that has always incorporated both psychedelic and progressive themes in their productions, they definitely fall closer to the latter here. Beginning with the title track 'Phantoms' Spintribe delves into a world of perfectly contoured bass and spaced out, astral motifs. Thick and chunky, the low end is beaming with ultra sonic character, while finely tuned percussion and redolent rhythms lock down a hip swinging groove. Restraint is the key here, although there are a myriad of incredible effects and quirky hooks, the tracks breath-ability is exceptional, produced by two artists who have clearly mastered their craft. The companion piece 'Vectra In Bedrock' is equally impressive, following a similar sonic ethos to that of it's predecessor, while adding more of an emotive twist. Backed by a hypno-groove and sultry rhythmic structures, it’s a creation that flows through a myriad of free form motifs. Hugely compelling throughout, ghostly fragments and astral effects converge for moments of sonic integrity, while timely synth swells and emerging atmospheres add to its mystical charm. Percussive flurries and wispy overlays then come in waves, gently evolving before cosmic creativities and a reflective break put a cap on this groovy yet emotive gem. It rounds out a stunning two track showcase from Spintribe, who continue to evolve as artists with this being perhaps their most mature work to date. Highly recommended.
