SpeakOf – Microcosm [False Face Music]

Hamed Safi aka SpeakOf returns to his comfortable home of False Face Music for a new EP entitled 'Microcosm'. The Canadian artist has been exploring the techno inspired side of his studio repertoire this year, most recently turning in two stunning renditions of Fomatic. Released in April also courtesy of False Face, it set in motion a new solo journey for the Toronto resident, one which has sparked creativity and has ultimately led to a brand new three track EP.

Beginning with 'Visions' we find SpeakOf crafting a deep, musical slice of techno. Warm, fluid and remarkably rhythmic, it's tonal themes are both effervescent and timeless. Sitting atop a spacious and well textured groove, it's a free flowing narrative with clever transitions, dynamic storyboarding and timely drops. Already receiving stellar support form DJs pre-release it might be one of SpeakOf's most charming creations to date.

The second and also title selection continues the ethos of the EP with a similar sonic character, but with a touch more mystery and tension across it's seven minute journey. A spoken word storyboard immediately conjours up ghostly visions while a rippling groove, smooth chord changes and warm overlays add just the right emotional touch.

The EP concludes with the most peak time inspired of the three cuts in 'Pyramid'. Although the tempo shifts down a touch from the previous two selections, it's sparser framework and buoyant groove sound absolutely cavernous. Dubbed out and once again relying heavily on redolent rhythmic themes, it's push and pull in terms of drama and tension are absolutely gripping, ultimately peaking during a third and final break before ushering a driving finale. It caps off a stunning EP for SpeakOf, one which continues a course of artistic growth while adding nicely to an already impressive body of work. Highly recommended.
