Solarc – Wicked Game [Balkan Connection]

Solarc makes his highly anticipated debut on Balkan Connection this week with 'Wicked Game'. The Spanish artist has a meticulous discography with appearances on Toolroom, YoshiToshi, Glasgow Underground and GU Music. Solarc's distinctive take on tech house has earned praise from all corners of the industry, leading to regular gigs not only in his Spanish homeland but all around the globe. Now Solarc presents his long awaited debut for Balkan Connection alongside remixes from Santiago Garcia and Criss Source.

The title and showcase piece 'Wicked Game' comes in warped and wobbly in all the right ways. A character rich and well sculpted groove brings immense swing as meticulous percussion and acidic rhythms drive momentum forward. Fresh vocal elements combined with vibrant tones lead nicely into the break where the vocal narrative gets further explored, ultimately setting up a powerful, yet classy build and big drop. The companion piece 'Storytellers' brings more funk with a spacious groove, clattering drums and detailed electronics. Lovely strums bring an element of soul before a chirpy arp adds a playful mood to close the track out. Two dance floor minded cuts which definitely push the genre boundaries of what we're used to on Balkan Connection. Lovely work from Solarc.

Two excellent artists have been brought in to rework the lead track 'Wicked Game' as well beginning with Santiago Garcia. The Argentinean artist is making his 36th appearance on the Serbian imprint which follows a strong EP for Sudam Recordings in June. Forever crossing borders Santiago continues to amaze with a stripped down, groovy interpretation of 'Wicked Game'. Spaced out synths bring an immediate hypnotic mood while quirky hooks a cool modular storyboard provide tension in the break, ultimately setting up an even groovier finale.

The second and final interpretation of 'Wicked Game' is provided by Criss Source who is making his fifth appearance on the label. The German artist has found a comfortable home on the Serbian imprint following two hugely successful EPs. Now delivering his first remix for the label Criss takes 'Wicked Game' into progressive minded territory with great results. A warm, chugging groove creates an inviting foundation early before the main break brings more of an ominous mood, exploring the vocal elements ever so slightly and in the process setting up an impactful drop. As you would expect the production is quite immaculate and no doubt sounds fabulous on a proper club system. Lovely remix from Criss which rounds out a slightly left of centre release for Balkan Connection, which is always nice to see. Highly Recommended.
