SEQU3L – Grey Skies / Elysium [Beat Boutique]

DJ Zombi's Beat Boutique welcomes SEQU3L back to the label for a new double a-side release. The Indian artist has become a regular contributor to the Israeli imprint with an EP and remix since making his debut in 2016. Already five months into the year and progressive music fans have yet to hear new material from SEQU3L, so this release arrives at a most welcome time.

Beginning with 'Grey Skies' SEQU3L explores the darker, more techno inspired side of his studio repertoire. Tough and dynamic from the outset, it’s electric groove provides a large presence while vocal fragments and menacing stabs fill in the framework. Stripping down into the break, muted kicks build tension while the vocal narrative flows through subtle modulation. Creeping up in the background is a wave of beautiful noise, building with a great deal of restraint before the groove drops for a percussive final act. Massive stuff from SEQU3L.

The release concludes with 'Elysium' which presents a myriad of emotions across its seven minute journey. Beginning with a dark, ominous vibe the creation evolves through mounds of bass, waves of percussion and squelchy synth swells, before eventually melting down into a striking break. Deeper and more involved than it’s predecessor, it's a heady centrepiece with unique design qualities and quirky hooks, which ultimately make for an inspired third act. Clever yet groovy, it caps off a superb two track showcase from SEQU3L, who begins his 2019 journey with some of his most creative work to date. Highly recommended.
