Sean & Dee – The Ascension [ICONYC]

Sean & Dee debut on John Johnson’s ICONYC Music this week with ‘The Ascension’ EP. Having made their debut on the label’s Noir division in November of last year, the Italian duo also lay claim to releases on Beatfreak Recordings and Dear Deer. Now following a remix for Movement Recordings to begin the year, Sean & Dee land on ICONYC with their first original project.

Beginning with ‘Last Tree Standing’ we get a healthy dose of the duo’s trademark crisp, detailed sound. Warm yet crunchy, it’s spacey arps rise into a glowing atmospheric backdrop as smooth chord changes enhance the melodic narrative. Always looking for those grandiose moments, Sean & Dee craft a cinematic style break, beginning with flashes of tranquillity before shifting into an effervescent lead and pulsating finale.

The title and showcase piece ‘The Ascension’ anchors the EP with its buoyant beats and ethereal tones. Fresh and dramatic across it’s seven minute journey, spacey arps add a serene quality, before melting down into a break with rising theatrics and granular sonics. The beauty lies in the drop, unassuming and with fresh rhythmic qualities, it’s one for the more astute listener and no doubt set for a massive reaction on a clued up dance floor.

The release concludes with ‘Moon Stairs’ which would have to be considered the EP’s most emotive selection. Punchy and deliberate at the outset, yet free and flowing as the storyboard evolves, it’s a unique contrast and one which tasteful melodies add a perfect balance too. A serene break highlighted by timely pianos, percussive flurries and tasteful modulation sets the stage for a classy drop and melodious finale. It rounds out three stunning selections from one of progressive music's fastest rising duo's in Sean & Dee. Definitely an act to be following as 2019 moves forward. Highly recommended.
