Santini – Lies [Strange Town Recordings]

Strange Town Recordings welcomes label stalwart Santini back for a new single entitled 'Lies'. The Canadian artist is making his third appearance on the Montreal imprint following the 'Beluga' single from February of last year and the April 2018 SpeakOf colab entitled 'Melodrama'. Now following a remix for Gonza Rodriguez to begin the year, Santini returns to Strange Town with a new single alongside remixes from Tantum and Kenan Savrun.

Beginning with the original mix Santini flexes the progressive minded side of his studio repertoire. Punchy and dynamic from the outset, it’s tough, rolling groove provides a large presence while striking stabs and rugged bass tones fill in the framework. A vocal narrative and catchy arp then get introduced, elevating mood and complementing the groove quite nicely. Evolving as the breakdown takes shape, the vocal commands your full attention, before clusters of drums and tasteful modulation set up a dark drop and suitably strong finale.

The first interpretation of ‘Lies’ is provided by Tantum who makes his label debut. Hailing from Germany, Thomas Koch aka Tantum has enjoyed a quick rise through the electronic underground. Upon making his debut on Ein2 in December of 2018, the Karlsruhe resident went to a hugely successful 2019, highlighted by releases on Juicebox Music, Monaberry and Poker Flat. Now following releases on Eat My Hat Music, Mango Alley and Songspire to begin the year, Tantum lands on Strange Town with an inspired take on 'Lies'. The rolling energy from the original translates really well with a sleek, rippling low end ultimately setting the pace. The tonal qualities have been reprocessed to dramatic effect, while the vocal elements work wonders during the break, playing off a maze of effects and percussive flurries before smoothly shifting energy into a purring finale.

The release concludes with Kenan Savrun providing the second and final interpretation of ‘Lies’. Hailing from Ankara, the Turkish artist has a long history as a DJ dating back to 2003, having shared the booth with Alex Niggemann, Eli and Fur, Andy Bros, Victor Ruiz and Oliver Huntemann. Upon releasing his first productions in September of 2018, Kenan has since gone on to showcase his music on 3rd Avenue, Droid9, Eat My Hat and Soundteller Records. Now following a remixes for Mistique Music and Movement Recordings to begin the year, Kenan dials in a quality rendition of 'Lies'. Tough and driving, the muscled groove and exotic drums grab your attention straight away. Evolving with a veteran’s savvy, fragmented vocals and catchy rhythmic themes add nicely to the journey, ultimately leading to a transcendent break and spirited third movement. A classically styled progressive remix from Kenan which caps off another well rounded release for Canada's Strange Town Recordings. Don't miss it.
