Ric Niels – Lahkuma [Deepwibe Underground]

Deepwibe Underground begins the new year by welcoming Ric Niels to the label for his debut EP. Although only eighteen months into his production career, the Argentinean artist has already achieved veteran level success. Longstanding imprints such as Clubsonica Records, Mango Alley and Movement Recordings have played host to Ric's groovy progressive sound, while the genre's tastemakers, most notably Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren have been primary supporters. Now with new music forthcoming on The Soundgarden, Ric makes his Deepwibe Underground debut with 'Lahkuma', alongside a remix from Kostya Outta.

Ric's three originals go down as some of his finest work to date, beginning with the melodic sounds of 'The Way'. From it’s full muscular groove to layers of finely tuned percussion, it’s immediately striking; building a strong emotional narrative through timely chord changes and glowing overlays. Buzzing synths create further tension across the main break, panning in and out of the stereo field, before a classy drop spearheads a groovy finale. Picking up the pace further is 'Ambedo' which carries a strong peak time vibe from the outset. Once again a healthy complement of percussion balances out an enormous low end, while smooth chord changes and haunting atmospherics provide a goosebump worthy response. The title track 'Lahkuma' (which interestingly was inspired by Ric's visit to Estonia a few years ago) rounds out the three originals with a slightly deeper and more spacious approach. Electric lines and robotized vocals build a mysterious narrative across the first movement, eventually giving way to a finale that is both trippy and emotive.

The release concludes with Kostya Outta returning to the label and providing the lone interpretation of 'Lahkuma'. The Belarus based artist made his Deepwibe Underground debut a year ago with a remix of 'Elyisum' by The Cobb. The next twelve months saw Kostya go on to record two singles for the Estonian imprint, both impressive projects backed by remixes from K Loveski and Paul Hazendonk. Now, as 2022 begins to take shape, Kostya returns to Deepwibe with a stellar rendition of 'Lahkuma'. Bringing a greater emotional narrative, Kostya crafts a warmer journey complete with balmy atmospherics and a full, free flowing groove. The break sits as the high point perhaps, moving from luminous arps into a gentle rush of noise and suitably thumping finale. A powerful remix from Kostya which rounds out an excellent first release of the year for Deepwibe Underground. Highly recommended.
