Paul Sawyer – Cacus [ICONYC]

Paul Sawyer returns to John Johnson's ICONYC with 'Cacus'. The UK artist and Krafted label boss has found a comfortable home on the US imprint, releasing three singles since making his debut in May of 2019. Now following an EP for Perfecto Black, the Winchester resident lands back on ICONYC with a new single alongside remixes from Mononoid and Slam Duck.

Beginning with the original mix Paul explores both astral and emotive narratives. Tough beats and a chugging groove sit at the foundation while electric arps and charged rhythms fill in the framework. Menacing yet fluid, smooth chord changes marry mind bending effects and hopeful overlays leading into the break, before classy modulation and spastic synths unite for an exhilarating crescendo and arp driven finale.

Also returning to the label are ICONYC stalwarts Mononoid. The Dutch duo have been a permanent fixture on the US imprint since early 2018 with their remix of Roger Martinez's 'Work'. Now fresh off an EP for Beat Boutique, Mononoid return to ICONYC with a stellar take on 'Cacus'. Through distinctive design and esoteric motifs, the Dutch duo have carved out an excellent complement to the original. Astral sonics, cinematic overlays and heady effects play off each other wonderfully, while a tough, rolling architecture anchors what is a hugely engaging journey.

Rounding out the release and making his label debut is Slam Duck. The Russian artist has been bridging the gap between progressive house and trance with his releases on Black Hole Recordings, JOOF Recordings, Perfecto and Pure Progressive. In what has been another prolific year, Slam Duck continues that momentum with a stunning rendition of 'Cacus'. Drawing on the sensibilities of the original the Russian artist leans closer to peak time, with a full, muscular groove and spastic rhythmic core. Striking effects and hypnotic arps sit amidst a layer of atmospheric tension, perfectly setting up a bass heavy break and ultrasonic finale. An monstrous remix from Slam Duck which caps off another excellent offering from John Johnson's ICONYC. Don’t miss it.
