Paul Angelo & Don Argento – Astraeus [Clubsonica Records]

Clubsonica Records continues a strong start to the year by welcoming Paul Angelo and Don Argento back to the label for their first EP. Hailing from Cyprus, the much-loved duo first appeared on the Colombian imprint in 2019 with a remix of Armandhe's 'While The Wolf's Away'. June of 2020 then saw Paul and Don return with a chart-topping rendition of Etherwave's 'Pathfinder', before rounding the year out with well received releases via Movement Recordings, Timeless Moment and UV. Now getting 2020 underway in style, Paul and Don return to Clubsonica for their first original project entitled 'Astraeus'.

Getting the release underway and sitting as one of the duo's most infectious tracks to date is the title selection 'Astraeus'. Punchy beats and a tough, muscular groove set the foundation for a storyboard of fragmented arps, symphonic overlays and piercing stabs. Pushing a dramatic narrative, icy swells and percolating effects drift across the main break, gently teasing the senses before giving way to an energetic roll and groovy drop.

Renowned for their dark yet energetic sounds, Paul and Don diversify their portfolio further with the playful 'Dioptra'. Smooth and buoyant from the outset, the creation delights with its crunchy rhythms, placid pads and striking stabs. The narrative evolves with a spirited lead line adding bounce and drive as the main break approaches. Undeniably emotive, the centrepiece allows the joyous theme to breathe atop a foundation of sizzling effects and rolling drums, eventually reaching a classy crescendo as the beats drop for an exhilarating finale.

Putting on a stamp on the three-track showcase are the rippling grooves and astral arps of 'Hypnosis'. Aptly titled, the eight-minute journey brings you into a world of perfectly intertwined hypnotic themes. Positive and heady in equal measure, it's a collage of meditative arps, hopeful synth swells and otherworldly effects which captivate across the first movement. Melodic clusters expand the musical narrative during a timely break, gently washing over a cavernous underbelly, heightening the senses and ultimately closing the release out on a charming note. For a progressive music duo who already find themselves in the genre's upper tier, the 'Astraeus' collection not only further cements their place but expands their repertoire with three fascinating productions.
