After getting 2021 off to a great start with his 'Claymore' EP (also for Balkan Connection), the Buenos Aires resident went on to remix Rick Pier O'Neil and Sebastian Haas with great success. Now returning with new original material Nicholas lands back on Balkan Connection with a three track showcase to begin the summer season. Beginning with 'Get Better' Nicholas presents a stylish blend of melody and flow. Warm beats and a muscular low end power the groove, while crunchy rhythms and sweeping effects deliver depth and texture across the first act. Placid overlays and tight arps emerge as the main break approaches, gently elevating mood throughout the centrepiece, before timely modulation provides a spine-tingling bridge into a soaring finale. ‘Never Be Complete’ follows suit with an even greater sense of rhythm and drive. Waves of undulating bass ultimately set the course for a wicked contrast between fluttery sonics and blissful atmospheres. Moving forward, fragmented arps and a dark tonal theme fade in and out of the stereo field, eventually giving way to an expansive break. As the centrepiece evolves its futuristic landscape captivates with each successive loop, delivering both tension and drama, before a subtle rise sparks a percussive drop and groovy third act. The third and final selection ‘You're Not a Beautiful and Unique Snowflake’ caps off the EP with a fuller, more heady vibe. A touch bigger and more peak time than its predecessors, it’s a full, rippling groove which sets the course for hypnotic lines and ominous themes to work their magic. Atmospheric swells and percussive flurries rise at opportune moments as the story unfolds, perfectly setting the stage for a tense break, big build and thumping drop. It rounds out a stunning three track offering from Nicholas Van Orton, who makes an excellent return to Balkan Connection with ‘Fight Club’. Highly recommended.
