Nadya – Unicorn [ICONYC]

John Johnson's ICONYC rounds out the month of March by welcoming Nadya to the label for her debut EP. The Russian artist has firmly etched her place in Russia's electronic music culture. As an accomplished DJ, the Saint-Petersburg resident has shared the stage with Adriatique, Solomun, Agents of Time, HOSH and many other top international talents. Now following a release on Natura Viva Black to begin her 2020 production journey, Nadya debuts on ICONYC with 'Unicorn'.

Beginning with the title selection ‘Unicorn’ Nadya moves into dark territory with a punchy groove, charged rhythms and devilish stabs. Both foreboding and mysterious, it’s flair for the dramatic grows as astral arps and crunchy electronics lead to an expansive break. Tension builds to a boil as timely modulation puts your anticipation on high, before the wonky melodies get washed away in a sea of dark beats and rippling grooves.

The companion piece ‘Phoenix’ finds Nadya continuing the tough, astral qualities of it's predecessor. It’s tough, rolling groove is perfectly carved, adorned with fiery percussion, spooky tones and unique cosmic artefacts. Once again, a dark first act preludes a cavernous break where sinister tones and gaseous atmospheres take centerstage, before a distinctly esoteric theme rises during a thrilling final act. It rounds out two powerful creations from Nadya who continues to be one of Russia's most promising melodic techno exports. Highly recommended.
