Mike Kohl – House / Infinity [Onestar Records]

Onestar Records opens the new year by welcoming Mike Kohl to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from Colombia, Miguel Cervantes aka Mike Kohl first came to our attention in 2020 with a dreamy atmospheric sound that captivated listeners and clubgoers alike. A three-year stretch of releases via his Scheduled Relapse imprint further established his sound, setting the stage for more prominent projects for Madloch's 3rd Avenue and South America Avenue. With 2023 wrapping up with a well-received remix of 'Sonica' by BERDU & Mauro Nuñez, Mike now adds Onestar Records to his resume with a two-track showcase entitled 'House / Infinity'.

Mike continues to explore his unique cross-genre style on the lead selection 'House'. Fluid and energetic throughout, it's a framework of warm kick drums and mesmerizing rhythms which lay the foundation for flashing percussion, flickering arps and soulful vocal accents to create a groovy first act. Looping chord stabs and fluttery overlays push the journey forward, bringing with them a smooth cruising vibe leading into the break. Keeping rhythm locked across the interlude, Mike showcases his keen dancefloor sensibility, in turn building anticipation with a calculated rise into a finale that is equal parts effortless and uplifting.

The hypno-sounds of 'Infinity' follow and further cements Mike's dance floor minded ethos. Its rippling drive is anchored by powerful beats and a clever coax of percussive splashes; nicely accented with vocal wails, exotic drum fills and panoramic arps to tie it all together. A calming vocal pad proves to be the most enchanting element however, adding space, depth and emotion, before tastefully building to a charming melodic finale to round out the release on a high note.
