Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic – Trespassing [Kunai Records]

The latest release from Kunai Records finds the label bosses Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic presenting a brand new single. Fresh off releases for Proton Music and Pro-B-Tech Records, the much loved trio continue a strong 2017 with 'Trespassing' alongside remixes from Framewerk, Tripswitch and Lonya & Maydan. Diversity has long been a trait in the Michael, Levan and Stiven Rivic arsenal. The trio drifts effortlessly from deep house to progressive house, often blurring the lines of conventional genres. Their latest 'Trespassing' accomplishes that and so much more. Fluid rhythms and warm bass swells combined with cascading themes and shimmering pads make for several magic moments. A serene break sits as the perfect emotive centrepiece before the funky roll and groovy electronics carry you home. A brilliant production once again from the long standing trio and one that's perfect for the warm season upon us.

The first interpretation of 'Trespassing' is provided by Framewerk who are making their debut on the label. Hailing from the UK, Darren James & Alec Milliner make up the Framewerk production duo. Long time progressive house fans may remember Darren and Alec as Manhattan who released more than a few gems from 1999-2003. More recently under their Framewerk alias they’ve appeared on the cutting edge imprints Chapter 24 Records and Selador. Now making their much anticipated debut on Kunai, Framewerk deliver an outstanding interpretation of 'Trespassing', taking it into techno inspired territory. Character rich acid lines, poignant vocal stabs and evolving synth textures make for a great first act. A short and timely break sparks tension as acid lines sizzle and a final atmospheric rush delivers a classy drop. A timeless remix from Framewerk and a perfect complement to the original. The UK duo have also provided a dub for the less acid minded DJ, retaining all the remaining themes for a clean and serene alternative.

The second interpretation of 'Trespassing' is provided by Tripswitch who is also making his debut on the label. Nick Brennan aka Tripswitch has a been a primary contributor to leading European label Iboga Records over the course of his career and more recently Nick Warren's The Soundgarden. His unique hybrid of progressive grooves and cutting edge design has worked wonders on Michael, Levan and Stiven's 'Trespassing', making it perhaps his most sought after remix to date. Beginning with muted beats, organic effects and neatly tailored percussion it's journey-esque appeal it evident early on. A smooth yet exhilarating flow makes for an emotive first act, perfectly foreshadowing an astral break. Storyboarded with veteran flair, Tripswitch takes you on a cosmic journey over the two minute centrepiece, with poignant moments leading to an energy bridge and delicate but oh so effective drop. A classy rendition from Tripswitch.

The third and final interpretation of 'Trespassing' is provided by Lonya and Maydan. The Israeli duo stand behind the Asymmetric Recordings imprint, Lonya as owner and Maydan as head A&R, having collaborated on numerous occasions in the past, most notably for Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. Now teaming up once again Lonya and Maydan close the release out with a stellar rendition of 'Trespassing'. Anchored by a warm, well carved groove and firing percussion, there's an electric mood from the outset. As drifting atmospheres descend over the framework, sweeping effects and metallic arps tantalize the senses. Anticipation unfolds as the main break progresses, phasing noise and clever modulation work in perfect unison before getting washed away as the pulsating groove returns for a magic moment. Heady stuff from Lonya and Maydan which rounds out another superb release on Michael, Levan and Stiven Rivic's Kunai Records in style. Highly recommended.
