Releases Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic – Unfamiliar Paths [ICONYC] By Release Promo Posted on 20th April 2020 7 min read 0 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Reddit Share on Linkedin Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic return to John Johnson's ICONYC with 'Unfamiliar Paths'. The long standing trio has continued to flourish on the US imprint with their two 2019 offerings resulting in widespread praise and receiving the remix treatment from Charlie May & Barry Jamieson and Martin Roth. Now following a new single for their Kunai imprint and a remix for Beatfreak Recordings to begin the year, Michael, Levan and Stiven find themselves back on ICONYC with a new single alongside remixes Habischman and Oliver Lieb. Although boasting a rich history in traditional progressive house, Michael, Levan and Stiven have never shied away from flexing in other areas. Their latest 'Unfamiliar Paths' boasts a bevy of dubbed out qualities and a massively twisted lead which puts it quite a bit left of centre. Twisted tech funk would be perhaps an apt description and it's ever evolving storyboard gets more mind-bending the further you get into it's near ten minute journey. A sonic masterpiece from the much loved trio. Remix number one is delivered by Habischman who makes his label debut. Born in Iran but now based in the UK, the London resident has found a home on some of House and Techno's most esteemed imprints, including Knee Deep In Sound, NOIR and SCI-TEC. Quite unhomogenized in terms of sound, Habischman now debuts on ICONYC with a quality rendition of 'Unfamiliar Paths'. Stripping the framework right down and reprocessing the main motif has allowed for a massive sense of space. It's here where ghostly vocal fragments and an unpredictable array of astral artefacts saturate your senses, ultimately resulting in a great complement to it's predecessor. Rounding out the release and providing the second and final interpretation is Oliver Lieb. The German artist has been a firm favorite of some of the world's biggest DJ's over the years; namely Sasha & Digweed who have featured many of his productions in their live sets and storied Global Underground projects. Also a long standing contributor to John's Bedrock imprint, Oliver has most recently been showcasing his music on Phobiq, Respekt Recordings, Riot Recordings and Tronic. Always a creative remixer, Oliver now puts a unique touch on 'Unfamiliar Paths' for his ICONYC debut. Tough and dynamic throughout, it's deliberate cadence, percussive flurries and quirky flair make for a powerful and concise techno workout to cap off the release in style. Michael, Levan and Stiven continue to impress here, with 'Unfamiliar Paths' being one of their most adventurous productions to date. Highly recommended.
