Michael A – Nothing Is Useless [Strange Town Recordings]

Montreal’s Strange Town Recordings continues it’s 2018 journey with a new single from Michael A. The Belarus based artist last appeared on the Canadian imprint in May of last year with his ‘Nature’s Secret’ single. Subsequent releases on Juicebox Music and Movement Recordings rounded out what was a great year for Michael. Now returning to Strange Town he presents his latest single ‘Nothing is Useless’ alongside remixes from Kasper Koman and Simply City.

Michael almost always aims straight for the dance floor and ‘Nothing Is Useless’ certainly does as well. It’s tough, effervescent groove comes with immeise drive, setting a strong presence as fuzzy electronics and hopeful pads envelop the framework. The main break proves to be quite solemn, with an air of hope before fully melting down into the electric groove for a classy drop.

One of the progressive house scene’s brightest new names has been Kasper Koman. An EP on Guy Mantzur’s Plattenbank Records has been a 2018 highlight along with a recent remix of Francesco Pico’s ‘Taming Da Echoes’ on the freshly relaunched Magnitude Recordings. Here he makes his Strange Town debut by taking ‘Nothing is Useless’ into deeper territory. The dramatic tone of the original is well conveyed but a roomier groove and emotive break make it an ideal complement. My favourite version on the release and definitely a track you’ll be hearing a lot in the coming months.

The release concludes with Simply City making his label debut. Hailing from Chile but now based in Montreal, Cesar Romero aka Simply City has become a fixture in the city’s burgeoning nightlife, earning a spot as one of Stereo’s resident DJs. On the production front he owns releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s Hope Recordings. Now making his first appearance on Strange Town he provides a minimal yet trippy interpretation of ‘Nothing Is Useless’ to close the release out. In a journey spread across nine minutes, the Montreal resident explores a variety of meditative motifs and airy atmospherics, all over a robust, rolling and incredibly rhythmic core. A stellar remix from Simply City which rounds out another excellent offering on Strange Town Recordings. HIghly Recommended.
