Matt Black & Chris Sterio – Progress [Mirabilis Records]

The latest release from Mirabilis Records finds Matt Black & Chris Sterio returning to the label with a new single. The UK duo last appeared on the Slovenian imprint in February of 2018 with their well received 'Space Funk' single. The veteran pair owns a collective resume that includes releases on 3rd Avenue, Balkan Connection, Perfecto Black and Pro-B Tech Music. Now uniting for a new single Matt and Chris land back on Mirabilis with 'Progress' alongside remixes from Micah and Monojoke.

Beginning with the original mix the duo moves into darker territory with tough punchy beats, buzzing lines and a compelling vocal sample. A well carved low end immediately grabs your attention along with a dynamic array of percussion. The narrative shifts into more reflective territory during the main break with a hopeful overlay and the return of the vocal narrative. A well crafted build makes for a smooth yet impactful re-entry, ultimately propelling the track to an acid fuelled finale.

First up on the remixes is Micah who makes his label debut following a remix for Pangea Recordings in April. The Canadian artist shows off his veteran versatility with a version that complements the tougher more stripped original quite well. Reprocessed vocal fragments and funked up, effervescent acid lines make up the core of the storyboard across the first act, before radically shifting energy into mind bending chord stabs and a squirrelly arp. Hugely creative ideas and with a mega twisted break this might be one of Micah's best ever remixes.

The release concludes with Monojoke returning to the label and providing the second and final interpretation of 'Progress'. The Polish artist made his Mirabilis debut in April of last year with the 'Texturize' EP, while also laying claim to releases on Clubsonica, Droid9, Or Two Strangers and Soundteller Records. Always a creative remixer, Monojoke lays down one of his euphoric progressive minded beauties here. The main themes translate very well amidst an array of cosmic effects and fiery percussion. A glowing lead theme eventually canopy's the sonic madness, transitioning into the main break for hugely emotive moments, before delivering a powerful crescendo and tasteful drop. Massive stuff from Monojoke once again which caps off an excellent release for Mirabilis Records. Don't miss it.
