The Brazilian artist made his debut on the Canadian imprint in November of 2017 with ‘React’, an EP written in collaboration with fellow countryman Lucas Magalhaes. Now following 2018 releases on Chromium Music, Nomad and Prisma Techno, Marcelo lands back on False Face with ‘Dazar’. Now acting as A&R for the South American division of the label, Marcelo seems to have found a nice home on the Canadian imprint. He gets 2019 underway with two stunning slices of techno, beginning with the title track ‘Dazar’. Written in conjunction with fellow Brazilian artist Indian, the duo explore unique rhythmic themes and ghostly motifs, all set over tight, punishing beats. Geared for a heady dance floor, it’s hip swinging cadence is undeniably modern, while clever beat layering and mild cross cultural leanings are sure to make for memorable peak time moments. The companion piece ‘Solitude’ finds Marcelo going solo with an equally impressive creation. The tempo shifts down as dark punchy beats and paranoid electronics get offset with an industrial backdrop and sinister vocal fragments. Building with a fiery flair, rugged stabs and shifting noise continue to deliver tension and drama, before ultimately building to a sonic sizzle for a heady conclusion. It rounds out what is a superb EP from Marcelo who continues to be one of techno music’s freshest artists. A great release from SpeakOf’s False Face Music to begin what promises to be a landmark year for the highly touted Canadian imprint. Highly recommended.
