Lerr – Cataleya [Balkan Connection]

Lerr returns to Balkan Connection for a new EP alongside remixes from Michael A and Hot TuneiK. The Montenegrin artist first appeared on the Serbian imprint in September of 2019 with his 'Missing' single. November then found Lerr return with a well received remix of Buba's 'Strange Feelings'. Also finding a home on Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden, Balance Music, RYNTH, Sound Avenue and Soundteller, Lerr now returns to Balkan Connection with 'Cataleya'.

Beginning with the title track Lerr moves into deeper territory with a warm spacious groove, smooth rhythms and dreamy tones. It’s both alluring and mysterious with wispy atmospherics and beefy drums advancing the narrative across the first act, before a buoyant theme adds further bounce leading into the break. Never losing sight of the dance floor, it's rhythmic power stays locked as melodic clusters unite for a magical moment during a short but impactful centreiece. The companion piece ‘Encounter’ picks up the tempo and explores the hypnotic sensibilities Lerr has become so loved for. It’s rolling groove is perfectly carved, adorned with muted hooks, organic percussion and meditative arps. Smooth and dubby across the first act, it eventually opens up into a tranquil storyboard, as a wave of fragmented arps and plucky hooks segue perfectly into a driving finale.

Fresh off a contribution to Sudbeat's Showcrates Vol. 8, Michael A returns to the label providing the first interpretation of 'Cataleya'. Setting the piece in motion is a bed of tough beats and rippling bass tones, while spastic synths and charged rhythms elevate mood as layers of exotic drums flow through the framework. Poignant tones and percussive flurries continue to bend the narrative, adding emotion and tension, before the second act drops a heartbreaking melody to fully saturate your pleasure centres.

The release concludes with label artist Hot TuneiK returning for his thirteenth appearance. The Mexican artist strips the groove down and rebuilds a brilliant percussive framework atop a robust low end. Rhythmic drum work and fluid electronics build a strong cadence across the first act, before a staggered theme and esoteric overlays add a surrealist vibe to round out the release. Another creative production from HotTuneik capping off another must have offering for Balkan Connection once again. Highly recommended.
