Leo Perez & Andre Moret – Ocaso [Nature Rec]

The latest release from Nature Rec finds label boss Leo Perez teaming up with Andre Moret for their debut collaborations. Hailing from Panama and Brazil respectively, both Leo and Andre have enjoyed success in their solo careers. A combined discography is highlighted by releases on Balkan Connection, Clubsonica Records, Droid9, Mango Alley and Stripped Recordings. Progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren have been regular supporters of the duo's groovy sounds. Now pairing up for the first time, Leo and Andre present their 'Ocaso' EP alongside remixes from Weird Sounding Dude and JFR.

Although having never worked together before, the creative synergy between Leo and Andre is evident immediately. Lead track 'Ocaso' is a groovy, atmospheric beauty which sets the tone for the entire release. Funky and fluid across the first act, the duo marry vibrant percussive concepts with pulsating rhythms and airy soundscapes for a tastefully timeless nine minute journey. Getting equal attention is the companion piece 'Sol Da Meia Noite' which comes in a touch deeper but still very much in the progressive spectrum. The warmth and drive from the groove is sensational, as it anchors a complement of exotic percussion, airy vocal wails and a dreamy yet striking arp, the latter of which makes for a transcendent moment during the main break.

Making his label debut and providing the lone interpretation of 'Ocaso' is Weird Sounding Dude. Based in Bangalore, the Indian artist has grown into one of his country’s most beloved progressive house producers. As a favourite of the genre’s most highly regarded tastemakers, Weird Sounding Dude has compiled an impressive discography with key releases via Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden. With a sleeker, more refined sound the Indian artist has been a genre standout across the first half 2021, notching well received remixes of ARTN, Bachir Salloum, Cream (PL), Dmitry Molosh and Sergey Muzarks. Now on the cusp of a release for UK behemoth Anjunadeep, Weird Sounding Dude debuts on Nature Rec with a powerful rendition of 'Ocaso'. A tighter take on the groove makes for a livelier feel immediately, as layers of percussion and effects build a captivating framework. Hypnotic concepts is one of many areas Weird Sounding Dude excels in, and the arp exemplifies that once again. Sleek and meditative yet somehow bursting with ultrasonic energy, it carries the first act with ease and perfectly allows for a greater atmospheric scope across the break, onwards to a chugging finale.

The release concludes with JFR also making his label debut and providing the lone interpretation of 'Sol Da Meia Noite'. Juan Franco Rivero aka JFR hails from Mendoza and has been rising out of Argentina’s progressive house underground since making his debut in 2017. 3rd Avenue, onedotsixtwo and Strangers Beats have been landing spots for his groovy progressive sound. 2021 has seen JFR be selective in his projects, while delivering standout remixes for Facundo Sosa and Sunburstz. Continuing that momentum as the year reaches it's fourth quarter, JFR provides a stunning take on 'Sol Da Meia Noite'. The tempo and drive rise dramatically, close to peak time territory in fact, with esoteric chord changes and arcane atmospheres juxtaposing that melodic colour perfectly. Soft vocal stabs bring a chanting style loop which only furthers the otherworldly feel the track has, while a celestial sounding break not only brings a new found theme but resets the proceedings for a buzzing conclusion. A sensational remix from JFR which caps off an amazing first time collaboration from Leo Perez and Andre Moret, two producers who are forging their path through the progressive music new school. Highly recommended.
