Kaiser Souzai – Kaiser Waltz [ICONYC]

Kaiser Souzai makes a welcome return to John Johnson's ICONYC with a new three track artist showcase. The Berlin artist has forged a strong bond with the US imprint this year, having delivered two remixes across the spring and summer months. Now as the fall season begins Kaiser presents his debut EP for ICONYC entitled 'Kaiser Waltz'.

Kasier always seems to find that creative sweet spot between progressive house and techno. This EP definitely sits closer to the latter beginning with the muscular grooves of 'Lights Out'. The Berlin resident's finely tuned production is on display here once again with crisp, detailed design and electric moods that are sure to spark even the most discerning dance floors. On a backbone of tough beats comes rugged rhythms, percussive splashes and an array of mind bending effects. Mechanical yet fluid, the narrative evolves during the main break, as raspy stabs and icy pads melt away into a rush of drums and noise for an absolutely enormous drop.

The title selection 'Kaiser Waltz' follows a similar sonic ethos and comes in just as impactful. It's punchy beats and crunchy rhythms create an energetic core early on. Astral qualities come in the form of piercing stabs and buzzing sweeps, intertwining to profound effect, as forboding atmospheres and percussive flurries continue to build mood and tension across the first act. The centrepiece only furthers its dramatic appeal, as granular waves slowly engulf the groove, before a haunting overlay and sinister vocal loop setup a stomping re-entry and punishing final act.

Rounding out the release is 'Andrins Saber' which is a slightly lighter affair compared to it's predecessors. A touch warmer but no less energetic, it's flowing sub bass brings emotive waves, while clattering percs and astral synths fill in the framework. A spacey arp soon takes centre stage, elevating mood and building tension in equal measure, before getting washed away into pulsating drop. It rounds out what is a stunning collection of music from Kaiser who has certainly taken straight aim at the peak time dance floors out there. Highly recommended.
