J Lauda – Magellan [Soundteller Records]

Deersky's Soundteller Records rounds out the month of November by welcoming J Lauda back to the label for his first EP. Based in Buffalo, New York, Jim Jarvis aka J Lauda made his Soundteller debut in 2020 with a contribution to the label's popular Vibrant Vibeland series. A release which set the course for offerings on Yotto's Odd One Out, Mango Alley, Manual Music and SLC-6 Music. Also well established as a DJ, Jim has opened for Above & Beyond, Cedric Gervais, Paul Oakenfold and more. Now, as the year winds to a close, J Lauda returns to Soundteller for his first EP project 'Magellan'.

Well known amongst progressive music fans for his melodic style, J Lauda continues to build on that narrative with selection one 'Ceres'. Smooth key changing grooves, ghostly vocal phrasing, timely effects and a particularly powerful drop make this equally satisfying as a late night headphone listen or sitting in the emotional sweet spot of a peak hour set.

Selection two 'Rehobeth' lands with an even greater emotional presence. Wonderfully carved grooves and gorgeous top lines give the journey an incredible sense of space, while a near two minute break brings all the hazy harmonic vibes you could ever want. Gorgeous stuff.

The release concludes with the title selection 'Magellan' which brings an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Perhaps the most emotive of the three, its wavy melodies are a metallic delight, building to an effervescent sizzle across the main break, before eventually melting down to some timely tonal tension as the beats drop for a thunderous finale. Beautiful stuff from J Lauda, an artist who continues to champion a timeless style of progressive house, one which is not afraid to be big and bold with melody and colour. Highly recommended.
