Masella is a producer of electronic music born in Granada, Andalucía, that inspired by nature, sensitivity and the mystery of the universe. He started in the world of music at the early age of 8 years studying classical music. He started listening to electronic music and discovering the exciting world of analog instruments. Masella’s productions are full of melodic techno, sensations and emotional atmospheres. This week finds Masella back on D-Formation’s Beatfreak Recordings, collaborating with the boss himself no less. We had a chance to catch up with Masella for an interview leading up to the release. Enjoy!

Hello Masella, thanks for joining us. What is your current mood and what was the last piece of music you listened to?

Thank you very much for having me for this interview. Right now I am very inspired and very focused on my studio. The last track I listened to was the new one from Moderat

How’s your year so far? And what are your plans for the coming week?

The year is full of releases, and I’m happy for that. And for this week and many more, many hours of production await me in the studio and prepare some EP in live format.

Your bio states you are inspired by nature, sensitivity and the mystery of the universe. Tell us how those affect the music you make.

Well, I think it has a positive effect on creating more emotional electronic music. This makes me take a path very marked by more melodic atmospheres and patterns, and that it is not a very aggressive sound, although it is, forceful.

Yes, well, for me the three tracks that make up the EP are quite interesting, but there is one in particular that I really enjoy because it has some elements that make it very forceful, it is focused on the club sound and the melody that it carries makes the track is epic from my point of view.

You’ve collaborated with D-Formation on a couple of remixes previous to this EP, so how did you guys meet and then eventually decide to work on music together?

Well, we met when I released my Ep Etna/Samay on their Beatfreak label. We decided to work together because I received a proposal from D-Formation in which he said that he valued and trusted my music and that he would like to do something together, and of course I gladly accepted because I think I could learn a lot from him and his experience and his vision of electronic music and release very interesting works together.

You’ve now released five originals and a remix on Beatfreak, so it’s safe to say you have a comfortable home there, what makes the label such a great place to release your music?

Yes, honestly I feel very comfortable producing music for Beatfreak, because I don’t have to adapt to certain patterns or genres, I can just be me and I appreciate that very much.

Your bio also states you have a love for analog gear so what does your studio set-up look like and do you favor physical gear over digital?

I always prefer Hardware and analog sound, but sometimes I complement my music with some digital element.

What studio tools featured heavily in the writing of this EP?

Instruments like the moog sub 37 , the korg wavestate , electron analog 4 mkII and roland tr8 were main for the EP

What’s a piece of gear or software that always gets used when you’re writing a track?

For me, my favorite instrument for creating phrases at the moment in production is the moog sub 37, and I write music on ableton live software.

Generally speaking, do you find it more difficult to come up with original tracks than remixing a track from another artist?

For me, it is more difficult for me to remix a track by another artist than to make an original track, because you have to follow the line of the original with those patterns but do it much better to highlight the remix, and I see that as a great responsibility, I prefer to work with tracks originals, although depending on the track that is remixed I can sometimes enjoy a lot and achieve a great result with the remix.

How much road testing or friend feedback is done before you’re ready to say a track is finished? And who is someone you share your new music with first for feedback?

Honestly I don’t usually send my tracks to anyone before they come out on the labels, if I finish my track and I trust my work I send it directly to the label without anyone’s approval or evaluation. If I share my music I do it with trusted friends and artists.

What would be a musical extravagance for your studio you would pay for, if you were very wealthy?

I haven’t even thought about this once, but I think what I would most seek would be a wonderful place with incredible views in a beautiful part of the world with many modular instruments 🙂

What’s a book you’ve read or film you watched that has left an impact on you, and why?

Interstellar.

Because it is a movie that for me has all the elements that I like the most, from the soundtrack, the mystery of the universe, the visual effects and the whole plot fascinates me, it is super exciting and I like it very much.

Apart from music, what makes you happiest?

Many things make me happy, including my dog ​​Aisha, walking in nature, seeing sunrises and sunsets, and my family.

What does the rest of 2022 hold for you? Anything you can share with us?

This 2022 is loaded with productions and collaborations with artists such as D-formation and Grazze, among others, and various music presentations in live format.
