Hannes Bieger – Obsidian [Beatfreak Recordings]

Beatfreak Recording continues a strong summer season by welcoming Hannes Bieger to the label for his debut EP. For the better part of two decades the German artist has been one of Europe’s most highly regarded mix engineers, working with the most cutting-edge producers in house and techno. 2017 saw Hannes step further into the spotlight as an artist, quickly building a portfolio of his productions through releases on John Digweed's Bedrock Records and Steve Bug's Pokerflat. Now following a release for HOSH's fryhide, Hannes debut's on Beatfreak with 'Obsidian'.

Beginning with the title selection Hannes crafts a peak time slice of melodic techno. Immediately compelling, it's punchy groove, charged rhythms and piercing stabs set the course for a spellbinding journey. Foreboding and astral is equal measure, it’s flair for the dramatic grows as mind-bending arps and sweeping effects lead to a short but effective break, building tension in the process and resetting the groove for a heads down finale.

The companion piece ‘Rift’ follows suit with it's pensive moods and relentless drive. It’s tough, rolling groove is perfectly manicured, adorned with striking tones, percussive flurries and tightly wound arps. Once again, a dark first act preludes a tense, almost paranoid sounding break, perfect for capturing the attention of your dance floor, before sending it into overdrive as the beats drop for a memorable moment. A powerful creation from Hannes, capping off an inspired Beatfreak debut for the esteemed German artist. Highly recommended.
