GMJ – Oranai (BC Edition) [Balkan Connection]

The latest installment of Balkan Connection's popular BC Edition series finds the label showcasing new interpretations of GMJ's 'Oranai'. Originally released as part of the 'Catharsis' EP in May of 2019 via Proton Music, it's a track which struck a chord with progressive music fans and still holds a special place in the Aussie artist's discography. Now receiving a Balkan Connection make-over, the Serbian imprint invites Nicholas Van Orton and DJ SAN to re-imagine the track for 2020.

First up is Dutch star DJ SAN who opts for a peak time approach. On a backbone of titanic beats and wobbly bass sits the recongnizable motif from the original. However brief it may be, there's a lovely contrast and one which razor sharp arps and glowing atmospheres seem to accentuate perfectly. Big time stuff from DJ SAN.

Rounding out the release is BCSA label boss Nicholas Van Orton who provides two interpretations. The 'Winter' version comes in dark and ominous as you would expect. Beautifully crafted drums, rippling bass tones, a shifty arp and waves of effects set the backdrop for that epic lead which just never seems to get old. The 'Summer' version carries a similar rhythmic sensibility but feels more open and hopeful. The strength of the groove really shines as a result, bouncing with boundless energy while that nomadic synth strikes at the most opportune moments. Both worthy of heavy play from some of the world's best progressive DJs so you'll likely be hearing them a lot in the coming months. They round out another very well constructed BC Edition from Balkan Connection that comes highly recommended.
