Giovanny Aparicio – Eric | Azul Profundo [Clubsonica Records]

Clubsonica Records opens the month of December by welcoming Giovanny Aparicio back to the label for a new EP. Hailing from Colombia, Giovanny Aparicio has emerged from his country's electronic music culture with a fresh organic sound. On the strength of early collaborations with fellow countryman and progressive music star Kamilo Sanclemente, Giovanny has spent the last half decade compiling an impeccable resume. His club-focused productions have found a home on trend-setting imprints such as Abracadabra Music, Anjunadeep, Hoomidaas and Sol Selectas, while world class DJs Blond:ish, Armen Miran, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Sabo and more have been steadfast with support. Clubsonica has also been a vehicle for Giovanny's groovy sounds, with his label debut coming in 2019 with a remix of 'Mahat' by Jan Dalvik; a project which was followed by a second and equally well-received remix for 'El Fin' by Gux Jimenez in 2020. Now, returning to the label for his first artist EP, Giovanny caps off a great year with 'Eric | Azul Profundo', alongside remixes from Kamilo Sanclemente, Maze 28 and Weird Sounding Dude.

Giovanny continues to find a perfect balance between progressive and organic house with the lead selection 'Eric'. A DJ friendly intro sets a solemn mood with rejuvenating atmospheres and wispy effects blanketing tough beats and chunky basslines. Exotic drums and metallic motifs add a splash of rhythm and colour to what is a mature club-effective arrangement, perfectly leading to a celestial sounding break, complete with operatic pads and cinematic refrains which carry the journey onwards to a spiritual finale. The companion piece 'Azul Profundo' has been much sought after since first being aired by Above & Beyond's Tony McGuinnness in the summer of 2021. Clocking in at nearly nine minutes in length, Giovanny's creative prowess shines once again as he crafts an organic piece that is rich with rhythm, groove and atmosphere. A cross-cultural lead sits at the core of the track, flowing through misty refrains and carnival-inspired rhythms, before giving way to an enlightening finale that's sure to leave a lasting memory on the dancefloor.

Returning to the label for the lone interpretation of 'Eric' is Kamilo Sanclemente. Long regarded as one of his country's premiere progressive house artists, the Cali resident has notched a litany of successes over the last decade. Prolific and consistent in equal measure, Kamilo has earned the praise of electronic tastemakers Guy Mantzur, Hernan Cattaneo, Lee Burridge and Nick Warren, while showcasing his music via All Day I Dream, Anjunadeep, The Soundgarden, Replug and more. Affiliated with Clubsonica for some time, Kamilo has operated as one of the label's A&Rs, while also recording eight originals and six remixes since making his label debut in 2015. 2023 has been highlighted by Kamilo's most recent Clubsonica project entitled 'Stellar Echoes', a three-track showcase which commemorated the label's one hundredth release in fine style. Now, following a contribution to Danny Tenaglia's Global Underground 'Brooklyn' mix compilation, Kamilo returns to Clubsonica with a thrilling take on 'Eric'. With more of a progressive state of mind, the Cali resident utilizes the main elements to resounding effect, adding his own musical charm and freeform instrumentation, with the end result being a transcendent journey that finds Kamilo at his creative best.

Making his label debut with the first interpretation 'Azul Profundo' is Maze 28. Hailing from Albania, Mario Zefi aka Maze 28 has emerged as one of his country's most hotly tipped progressive house artists. In just three short years the Durres resident has earned support from Antrim, DJ Ruby, Ruben Karapetyan, Dosem, Nick Muir, Paul Van Dyk, Stan Kolev and more, while his melodic creations have found a home on Droid9, Juicebox Music and Mango Alley. Now, adding Clubsonica to his resume, Maze 28 makes his label debut with a powerful rendition of 'Azul Profundo'. While maintaining the elusive spirit of the original, Maze 28 aims squarely at a peak-hour dancefloor, taking the track into progressive minded territory. Complete with infectious drive and haunting atmospheres throughout, it's a storyboard of capsizing grooves and mesmerizing synth progressions which make for an exhilarating sonic experience.

The release concludes with Weird Sounding Dude returning to the label for the second and final interpretation of 'Azul Profundo'. Long a favourite of genre tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy J and Cid Inc, the Bangalore resident often touches on disparate themes and sounds, straddling the divide between intergalactic design and groove-centric hypnotism. With a career that now spans a decade, Weird Sounding Dude has compiled an impressive discography with standout releases via Anjunadeep, Hoomidaas, The Soundgarden and Sudbeat Music. Clubsonica has also been a landing spot for Weird Sounding Dude, with his label debut coming in 2021 with a well-received remix of 'Mirage' by Sergey Muzarks. Now, following a Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren championed remix for SLC-6 Music, Weird Sounding Dude makes a welcome return to Clubsonica with a superb take on 'Azul Profundo'. Drawing inspiration from the original, the Bangalore resident layers exotic percussive arrangements and arcane electronics atop punchy beats and chunky grooves. Mysterious and thought-provoking throughout, it's a heady amalgamation of sound which makes for a club-effective yet uniquely atmospheric journey, elegantly flowing through trippy melodic clusters and wintry overlays, before a refined take on the lead and a desert-tinged break sparks an immense finale.
