Gaston Ponte – Quadrant [Strange Town Recordings]

Strange Town Recordings caps off their summer season by welcoming Gaston Ponte to the label for his debut single. 2020 has proved to be a great year for the Argentinean artist, landing releases on Asymmetric Recordings, Balkan Connection, Dopamine White and Soundteller Records. Now following a remix for BCSA, the Buenos Aires resident debuts on Strange Town with 'Quadrant', alongside remixes from Michael A and Ewan Rill.

Beginning with the original mix Gaston works organic drums and tranquil arps over a foundation of warm beats and rippling bass. Energy and groove are at a premium as layers of percussion and timely effects segue into the main break. The emotional narrative comes to full fruition here with a gorgeous blend of bubbly arps and warm chords uniting for a poignant centrepiece. Smooth yet powerful, the final act ensues as the beats drop into a wave of noise and percussive flurries which carry you home.

The first remix is provided by Michael A who has become a core artist for the Canadian label with this being his seventh appearance. In a year highlighted by releases on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music and Cid Inc's Replug Records, Michael now turns in one of 2020's best remixes with a stunning take on 'Quadrant'. Smooth and free flowing from the outset, the relationship between it's rhythmic and melodic elements is quite impressive. Warm bass tones marry a rugged core while detailed percussion pushes the momentum forward. Progressively more emotive, it’s unique and striking effects complement the overt arps all the way into the break, before completely opening up into a goosebump worthy moment. A stripped back drop seems perfectly appropriate, allowing the magic to subtly rebuild across a purring final movement. Massive stuff from Michael A.

Rounding out the release and providing the second and final interpretation of 'Quadrant' is Ewan Rill who returns to the label for his fourth appearance. Always a creative remixer, the Russian artist reworks the groove for more of a traditional progressive feel while the melodic theme sits gently beneath the surface as the first act evolves. Eventually opening up across the main break, it's playful nature delights and excites before getting surrounded by that buoyant groove and blissful atmospheres for a rousing finale. A gorgeous remix from Ewan which caps off another superb release for Canada's Strange Town Recordings. Highly recommended.
