Hailing from Rosario, the Argentinean artist first emerged in 2020 with a contribution to BC2’s ‘Novus’ collection. 2021 has seen further successes with 3rd Avenue and Future Avenue playing host to FJL’s progressive sound across four Various Artists collections. Now presenting his first ever artist EP, the Rosario resident steps up to Antrim’s Or Two Strangers with a three-track showcase entitled ‘Gardens’. FJL’s career momentum continues to rise with the deep, emotive sounds of the title selection. Played out over eight minutes, it’s fluid groove and hypnotic rhythms set the foundation for an evolving musical narrative. Pixie-like melodies come in waves across the first act, playing off ghostly refrains while timely drops and sweeping effects carry into the main break. Stripping down to muted beats, the interlude builds anticipation as glowing atmospheres and clustered melodies unite for a heartfelt finale. The journey continues with the deep, chugging vibes of ‘Dayglow’. Immediately captivating, it’s robust bassline, plush undertones and gaseous effects make for anticipatory beginnings. Rolling percussion adds swing to the framework, while clustered melodies play off the well carved low end as a smooth atmospheric rise initiates the break. Furthering its nostalgic leanings, the main motifs trail off across the centrepiece, perfectly setting up a groovy drop and tastefully musical final movement. The final selection ‘Woodlots’ continues the EP’s mesmerizing melodic storyboarding. Deep and fluid throughout, it’s delicate motifs and organic designs are mysterious yet emotive, backed by a warm, pulsating groove, underpinning the track and translating its spiritual message to the dance floor. It rounds out a gorgeous collection of music from FJL, who makes his Or Two Strangers debut a hugely memorable one.
