Ewan Rill – Sun Is Missing [Deepwibe Underground]

Deepwibe Underground opens up the new year by welcoming Ewan Rill back to the label for a new EP. The Russian artist and Sever Records boss has been a mainstay of the progressive house underground since first appearing in 2011 with a release on Balkan Connection. Now nine years on he stands as one of the genre's most prolific artists with a discography of more than 1200 credits. 2019 was a strong year for the Saint Petersburg resident with an appearance on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music being one of the highlights. Now getting 2020 underway in style Ewan returns to Deepwibe Underground with 'Sun Is Missing'.

Spread across two tracks it’s the title selection which gets the release underway. Tough and chunky, it’s a piece that sits comfortably in the creative space between progressive house and melodic techno. Beginning with a punchy groove, it’s ominous tones, rough stabs and melodic clusters converge for an engaging storyboard. Sonic fragments and a ghostly air advance the narrative during the main break, before smoothly segueing into a cosmic finale.

The release concludes with the darker, hypnotic sensibilities of ‘Ctron’. Anchored by chunky slabs of bass and driving percussion it sits as a perfect complement to 'Sun Is Missing'. Effervescent tones make for a lively rhythmic core, subtly building momentum across the first act before a second movement of acidic stabs advances the storyboard into a sinister break. A mood setting moment to say the least, culminating with a fiery roll and devilish finale. It caps off two satisfying tracks from Ewan who has showcased a darker side of his repertoire here, proving once again that he one of the most prolific progressive house producers of our time.
