Ewan Rill – Option Exist [Soundteller Records]

Ewan Rill returns to Deersky's Soundteller Records with a three track showcase 'Option Exist'. The Russian artist and Sever Records boss has been a mainstay of the progressive house underground since first appearing in 2011 with a release on Balkan Connection. Now a decade later he stands as one of the genre’s most prolific artists, with a discography of more than 1250 credits and appearances on esteemed imprints such as Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden. It's been just over four years since Ewan's last Soundteller appearance and he makes the most of his return with three powerful tracks.

Continuing to stretch his creative wings, Ewan goes a touch more melodic than we're used to on the lead track 'Option Exist'. A buoyant, bubbly groove sets stage early on as lively rhythms and bouncy percussion bring an energetic vibe across the first act. Gentle melodic phrasing then emerges, foreshadowing an even more poignant break. Warm and a touch romantic, the centrepiece is highly memorable, with it's trance-inducing powers effortlessly seguing into a playfully cosmic finale.

The second selection 'Long Snake Road' ups the pace a bit with a tougher more heady vibe. A buzzing groove immediately grabs your attention, while clever rhythms and trippy effects provide a clean transition into a section of emotive chord changes. The mood changes once more as the break goes from something quite esoteric and otherworldly back to a more traditional melodic approach as the groove carries the colourful journey home.

Adding further depth to the release are the quirky qualities of the third and final selection 'Geartbel'. Clever beat patterns and a timeless electronic sense fuel this one early, eventually leading to an expansive and highly emotive break. Warm pads and nicely timed chord changes bring a bright, heartfelt quality to the interlude, as it melts back down to a groovy drop and glowing finale. Fresh sounding stuff from Ewan which caps off a very well rounded EP for the veteran producer. Highly recommended.
