Hailing from Tajikistan but now based in the USA, Dzhef has made considerable strides since first appearing in 2018. Releases for BQ Recordings, RYNTH and Suprematic highlight his discography and have been great landing spots for his organic house sound. Now debuting on Soundteller, Dzhef presents a three track showcase entitled 'Serenity'. The title selection leads the release off with a healthy dose of exotic drums and melodious bass lines. Warm and inviting across the first act, the narrative builds through liquid-like effects, haunting vocal pads and hazy harmonics, the latter of which provide a smooth transition into the main break. Colourful and poignant in equal measure, the centrepiece flows through shifty melodic phrases as nature samples add depth leading into a gorgeous final act. The EP’s midway point finds Dzhef exploring a deeper narrative with ‘Hutu’. From stripped down beginnings comes spiritual atmospheres and rolling rhythms, slowly descending over bulbous beats and clattering drums. As the narrative evolves so too does its pensive appeal, with acidic swells and soulful instrumentation highlighting the seven minute journey. Rounding out the release and complementing the previous selections are the captivating vibes of ‘Vishnu Mana’. It’s warm beats, perfectly sculpted bass and detailed drums unite for a buoyant rhythmic core. Sleek effects and emotive overlays advance the narrative with an effortless ease, splitting moods between the surreal and soulful, before a cinematic break adds just enough tension to spearhead a groovy finale. It caps off an inspired collection of music from Dzhef, who makes his Soundteller debut in fine style. Highly recommended.
