Dexter Curtain & Markus Jahn – Prescription EP [ICONYC]

John Johnson’s ICONYC imprint returns this week by welcoming Dexter Curtain & Markus Jahn to the label for their debut EP. The German duo have been hotly tipped this year with releases on MNL and Tenampa. Now stepping up to ICONYC, Dexter and Markus present their debut EP for the US imprint entitled ‘Prescription’.

Beginning with ‘Diazepam’ we get a deep and inviting groove which quickly gets adorned with bouncy, percussive clusters. Bongos and chord stabs add mightily to the rhythmic flow before a short break shifts energy further into the percussion narrative. It’s buoyant themes, although a touch indistinct are going sound enormous on the dance floor and how well they play off the afro motifs is quite lovely.

The companion piece ‘Atropine’ comes in deeper, tougher and more hypnotic. The bold percussive feel of ‘Diazepam’ holds true with big, dynamic claps making their presence felt. This however is a piece built around evolving textures and soundscapes, which slowly drift in and out of coherence for the ultimate unpredictable storyboard. Definitely one for a late night dance floor and a perfect way to round out the EP. A great signing for John Johnson’s ICONYC imprint once again.
