David Granha & Flowers and Sea Creatures - Better Tomorrow (The Remixes) [Strange Town Recordings]

The latest release on Strange Town Recordings finds the label showcasing new interpretations of 'Better Tomorrow' by David Granha and Flowers and Sea Creatures. Originally released in March of this year it pitted the Canadian collective and Spanish artist in a unique collaboration. The results were excellent with a vocal led, emotive number alongside remixes from Tone Depth and Jaap Ligthart. Now we see the label inviting Praveen Achary, Futur-E and Dustin Nantais to reinterpret the track for the summer season.

I've noted this before but I'll say it again, Praveen Achary chooses his projects wisely. We last heard from the Indian artist with a remix of Pete McCarthey's 'Java' courtesy of John Johnson's ICONYC imprint. Now stepping up for one of his most anticipated projects to date Praveen takes 'Better Tomorrow' into deep, meditative territory. As you would hope, the vocals shine here but it's the delivery which makes them come off as special they should. The complementary elements are elegant and charming, providing just the right sonic space, while the framework is stripped, punchy and suitably modern. The shifty harmonics and gentle haze are unbelievably emotive and the piece is so well storyboarded that just the clap dropping in the third act sounds absolutely enormous. A superb take and for my money Praveen's best ever remix.

The second interpretation of 'Better Tomorrow' is provided by Futur-E who is making his second appearance on the label. The Greek artist last appeared on the Canadian imprint in November of 2015 with a remix of 'This Month Only' by Philip James de Vries. Owner of an impressive discography, Futur-E has also had his music showcased on Cinematique, MNL and Traum. Always a consummate remixer he delivers a deadly interpretation of 'Better Tomorrow'. In upping the tempo and girth of the mix it's resulted in something perhaps suited to peak time play. Quirky motifs, metallic melodies and gorgeous strums highlight the mix, with vocal hovering above, playing off the strums perfectly. Big, bold and full of great moments, a lovely remix from Futur-E.

The release concludes with Dustin Nantais returning to Strange Town for his second appearance. The Canadian artist released his 'Small Fish in a Big Sea' on the label in January of 2015 and has since found a home on Paul Hazendonk's Manual Music and MNL imprints. Dustin is definitely one of most creative remixers out there. It's pretty rare you hear a result that sounds even remotely like the source material and I've always thought that's what a remix should be. He sticks firmly to that ethos here with a radically revamped groove providing mountains of funk before the vocal gets introduced as the second act begins to take shape. Elastic-like hooks add a quirkiness to the mix and play off the low end really well as the guitar elements add a touch of soul all throughout a gorgeous third act finale. Beautiful work from Dustin once again and great remix package from Strange Town Recordings. Highly recommended.
