Bryan Wolf Ear & Philip James de Vries – Dreamcatcher [Strange Town Recordings]

The latest release on Strange Town Recordings finds label boss Bryan Wolf Ear teaming up with fellow Canadian Philip James de Vries. A well known DJ in Montreal, this will actually be Bryan’s first discography credit while Philip is best known for his work on Traum, Wide Angle and his own Temparc Music imprint. Together the duo have crafted a thematic piece entitled ‘Dreamcatcher’ which comes alongside remixes from Deeparture, Ewan Rill and rAin.

The original mix leads the release off with a calming almost serene vibe. It’s warm, laid back groove is incredibly inviting, while a complement of textural designs and astral effects further tantalizes the senses. Not without emotive moments, the lead motif does come off incredibly heartfelt but in an understated, indistinct manner, which is perhaps where the brilliance lies. A gorgeous collaboration from Bryan and Philip.

The three remixes all take the track somewhere interesting and different which is really nice. First up Strange Town label artist Deeparture brings his smooth, free flowing style to the track. The Dutch artist has transformed 'Dreamcatcher' into a playful, joyous slice of progressive house that is a touch more grandiose and no doubt going to work some magic on the dance floor.

Next up Ewan Rill returns to the label for his second appearance which follows his ‘Deus Ex Machina’ EP from September of last year. Always a creative remixer, the Russian artist keeps the deep vibe from the original while reworking the groove and rhythmic core for a more traditional, main room dance floor. The dubbed out, droney qualities of the original are conveyed remarkably well however, resulting in a journey into delicate melodic textures and growling tonal themes. Lovely stuff from Ewan.

The release concludes with one of the progressive scenes fastest rising stars in rAin. Hailing from Mauritius, rAin Bholah aka rAin has been carving out a unique place in the underground with releases on Juicebox Music and Soundteller Records. Here he closes the release out with one of his most heartfelt remixes to date. The tempo comes down and the groove opens up tremendously, adorned with organic percussion and dulcet tones. The amazing vibe from the original translates wonderfully and with that deep, chunky foundation also makes it highly danceable on a deeper floor. A gorgeous remix from rAin who remains one of the top deep/progressive house talents to keep an eye on this year. Strange Town got the year off to a great start and the momentum continues with an all round solid package here. Highly Recommended.
