Ben Yang – Prophet [Soundteller Records]

Deersky's Soundteller Records begins the new year by welcoming Ben Yang to the label for his debut single. Based in Miami, the US artist has the distinction of being the first new producer to release music via Eli & Fur's NYX Imprint, where he made his debut in June of 2019. November of the same year then saw Ben remix the duo's vocal hit 'Into The Night' for Anjunadeep. Now following a quiet 2020, Ben begins the new year with his Soundteller debut 'Prophet' alongside remixes from David Leckenby and Kenan Savrun.

Clocking in at 127 BPM the trance inspired original leads the release off. Tastefully melodic, it’s muscular foundation, pulsating rhythms and hopeful overlays unite for captivating first act. Fragmented arps and icy effects add further depth and rhythm, before segueing into a melodic break which carries a lovely sense of refinement. Muted keys and pixie-like sonics create a surreal environment, resetting the mood before getting washed away in a rush of fluid beats for a purring finale.

Returning to the label and providing the first remix is David Leckenby. After making his Soundteller debut in 2019 with a contribution to the 'ADE Sampler', the Australian artist returned for his 'Coalesce' EP in August of 2020. Now following releases for INU Musika and Proton's Particles, David returns to the label for a groovy rendition of 'Prophet'. The framework opens up and the tempo drops considerably for a dreamy, emotive take that complements the original beautifully. Warm contoured bass flows through feel good chord changes throughout the journey, while flickering arps and sweeping atmospheres add just enough sensory stimulation to keep it tastefully poignant.

Also returning to the label is Kenan Savrun who provides the second and final interpretation. As one of 2020's rising progressive producers, the Turkish artist compiled an impressive catalog across the year. Releases for 3rd Avenue, Eat My Hat, ICONYC Noir and Movement Recordings were all sensational, further establishing Kenan's electric sound. Now following a new single for Another Life Music to begin the year, Kenan rounds out the release with a quality rendition of 'Prophet'. Big and powerful from the outset, it's robust groove and crunchy rhythms are nicely geared for peak time play. Complementing the muscular underbelly are evolving atmospheres, cosmic effects and melodic clusters, which add a lovely sense of space to the framework. The main break furthers the atmospheric scope of the narrative, perfectly setting up a gentle build and commanding drop. A huge remix from Kenan which caps off a great release to start the year for Soundteller Records. Highly recommended.
