A SKITZO – Mournful Eyes [Soundteller Records]

Deersky’s Soundteller Records ushers in the holidays by welcoming A SKITZO to the label for his debut EP. Since first appeared in 2014, the Bosnian artist has found a unique footing in the electronic underground with releases on Mirabilis Records, Submarine Vibes and The Purr. Now rounding out a great year A SKITZO debuts on Soundteller Records with ‘Mournful Eyes’.

A SKITZO has been quite diverse in his output this year, ranging from deeper house to melodic techno. Across his two track debut for Soundteller we get a bit of both beginning with the title cut which comes in on the deeper side of things. Aptly titled, there’s a melancholic vibe running through this with tight beats, organic drums and processed piano stabs converging for a smooth journey. Wispy vocal elements add a greater sense of space, particularly after the main break, as the piece opens up for a more melodious finale.

The companion piece ‘A.h. 35’ drifts closer to melodic techno territory making it an ideal complement to ‘Mournful Eyes’. Thematically however there are consistencies as plonky tones and mildly cross cultural motifs do add a lot to the narrative. A fiery stab is perhaps the most dynamic element however, under constant evolution throughout before building to a sizzle during a rousing final act. Two diverse and inspired cuts from A SKITZO who has saved his best work to make his Soundteller debut a memorable one. Highly recommended.
